With the new update process, customers can download software to a USB drive, visit a dealer, or upgrade over the air via WiFi. Ford is making this its first Wi-Fi-enabled software update. The automaker encourages drivers to use it instead of existing methods of upgrading.
SYNC 3 version 2.2 has supported Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in Ford vehicles since model-year 2016. To update this version, customers need to download the new software update.
As part of Ford Connected Vehicle and Services, Don Butler, an executive director, explained that the SYNC 3 software platform makes it easy to update so our customers can get the latest and most significant features, functions, and security enhancements. “Over-the-air updates are a great way to upgrade features while keeping customers in the loop continually.”

Android Auto
Android Auto allows you to quickly and safely enjoy Android features while driving on AndroidTM devices 5.0 and higher. The app offers Google Maps, Google Play Music, phone and messaging apps, and third-party apps on the car’s built-in display. Voice controls are also available. Google voice search, large touch targets, and an easy-to-use voice control system make Android Auto the ideal smartphone for driving.

Apple CarPlay
All iOS 7.1 and later iPhone models are compatible with Apple CarPlay. The Apple CarPlay feature lets iPhone users make phone calls, navigate with voice guidance, listen to music, and send and receive messages with the ease of a smartphone. With this feature, drivers can focus on driving. Wireless updates are also available
SYNC has been upgraded since 2009, but Ford is offering a WiFi update for the first time. SYNC 3 often connects to a customer’s designated WiFi network to check for updates in Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles with Automatic System Updates enabled. An update is automatically downloaded over a while in the background if it’s available, without any customer input required. In addition, As long as the WiFi connection is established before the vehicle turns off, SYNC 3 will perform the update, so the vehicle does not have to be running during the update process.
